OUR NATURAL DYES

We use Natural Dyes for some of our dresses but we are still learning to improve our methods. Nature offers us multiple possibilities of colors to dye fabrics. In natural dyeing, each color carries subtle and harmonious shades. Synthetic colors could never imitate them. We were impressed that we could smell the leaves from nature when we touched the fabric

Organic

Our Indigo Dyeing is 100% natural and often organic. It is done using a living fermentation process that naturally sets the dye into the textile. These colors are “alive”, they evolve with time, in the shade or in the sun, the shades are also slightly different. The ingredients we use in natural dyes are 100% biodegradable.

Here are the plants we use:

Blues from strobilanthes cusia leaves
Browns from coconut husks
Blacks from ketapang leaves
Yellows from mango leaves
Reds from sappan wood

Sustainable

Our Natural Dyes are not harmful to the environment since they are 100% natural and come from renewable sources. They are obtained from plants, fruits and minerals. Moreover, natural dyes consume less water than synthetic dyes. The dye and wash baths can be reused several times. The natural indigo vat, for example, can last for months. Simply replenish it with the necessary ingredients.

Medicinal

Natural dyes offer better UV absorption in the fabrics therefore you are able to better protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Since they do not contain any harmful products, plant-dyed textiles can be suitable for all skin types and especially the most sensitive such as babies for example.

80% of dyeing plants have medicinal properties and medicinal virtues. For example, indigo was traditionally used as a healing agent or bandage as well as an insect repellent.

We use a range of plant materials, and pigments to create our natural dye clothing. If you enjoy an appearance that can range from a tie-dyed effect to darker and lighter spots then Natural Dyes are a great choice. Natural dyes do tend to fade faster then the fiber reactive dyes but they have amazing wellness benefits and are hands down the most eco-friendly.

Ethical

The work of the natural dyeing is mainly artisanal. Therefore a strong need for skilled labor, thus providing employment opportunities for all those involved in the cultivation, extraction and work of these dyes.

Original Color

Natural Dye is very difficult to obtain a perfect result with each production because many factors come into play such as techniques, plants, types of fabrics. It is not an exact science and this is what makes the beauty and uniqueness of these fabrics. This means our colors will shift from dye bath to dye bath and from season to season, based on the specific conditions when each fiber was grown. Natural dyes are as unpredictable as nature itself, therefore it is beautiful.

There are no added chemicals to even out perfect colors. There are no chemical preservatives to make them not fade. That’s why the rule is store and dry away from direct sunlight. We tell people if you like perfection look for chemical dyes but if you like nature's imperfections, enjoy plant dyed. (Wabi sabi philosophy)
